The Battle for Europe tournament was established on November 28, 2001. Very little is known about the early beginnings. As far as we can tell today, BFE#1 saw 17 battles featuring DoD BETA 1.3b before its existence was announced on the official Day of Defeat website (in late January 2002) and hundreds of new players joined the tournament. This led to the split of both armies into two on each side and the rest of the campaign went clearly in favor of the Axis who did not suffer from a bad organization as much as the Allies did. BFE#1 saw the introduction of Day of Defeat BETA 2.0 and with it, MGs. Tactics had to adopt to that new weapon on both sides. Voice communication was slowly introduced but most players still used text chat. There were only class limits for MGs and sniper (two each, later one each) while all other weapons were unlimited. Battles were fought twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, lasting 12 hours each (on the same map). During the last third of the campaign, the beach invasion maps dod_axisinvasion and dod_alliedinvasion were used for marine attacks. They were played for four hours before the actual battle map was played (for the remaining 8 hours).
Some legendary battles were fought on maps such as schwetz, caen, zafod, anzio.
The end of BFE#1 was not pre-scheduled but, after an extremely long campaign with 25 battles in total, the Tournament's Administration simply decided to end the campaign, which was clearly won by the Axis thanks to the "new" AxisGW. The campaign ended in April 2002.
